Jenn’s New Necklace- “The MB”

I just fell in love with this Dahlia focal bead by Turtle Soup Beads. I though that I wanted to stitch some kind of elaborate necklace. However, no matter what style I tried, it just did not do this flower justice.

After weeks of pondering what to do with it, I remembered a phrase my mother likes to say, “Simple techniques, but luxurious materials.” I put everything into this necklace: Turtle Soup Bead polymer clay beads, crystals, pearls, glass, and metal chain.

Once this necklace was complete, I realized that it was very much in the styling of our friend Michelle B. So, I named it in her honor.

New Swarovski Colors

We just got in four new Swarovski colors: Topaz Blend, Amethyst Blend, Crystal Bronze, and Chrysolite Opal. We only got them in 8 mm to start with as we wanted to know what you thought of them. So, please stop by and let us know what you think.

This bracelet was made with the Topaz Blend. This crystal has dark brown swirls-- a really beautiful effect that is hard to see in the picture. Also used in the bracelet are: lampwork beads from Buckaroo Beads, bead aligners, and new spacer beads from TierraCast.

Sterling Filled Items Are Now In!

As you may know, the price of sterling has increased dramatically over the past several months. In response, our metal supplier is now carrying sterling filled items.

Much like gold filled, this is still technically a plating. However, because of the thickness of the metal, and because of the process in which it was made, the silver should not wear off like a normal base-metal plating would. This is a cost effective alternative for those of us who love the look of silver, yet do not want to pay for the silver prices.

This first shipment has round wire and smooth, round beads in it. More will be coming soon.

Flexible Class Hours ~ Many of us will be staying closer to home this summer because of the crazy gas prices. If you are having a “stay-cation,” you will still need fun stuff to do! We are leaving more open spaces on our calendar than usual, so you can pick-and-choose times and projects. We need only two people to hold an evening class (after 6 PM,) so grab a beading buddy and come play! Individuals can request a daytime lessons during regular business hours.

Highlights from the Tucson buying trip...

Crystals- Lots and lots of crystals in a variety of shapes, colors & finishes. It is a toss-up on which style is our favorite - either the ones that have designs in the glass (stripes, dots, or animal prints,) or maybe the necklace design that comes on wire, so all you need to do is add a clasp.

Pearls- You asked for bigger pearls and more colors. We got them!

Seed Beads- 20 new colors are on the wall including several in the Apollo and Picasso lines. A few of these are limited editions, so make sure you buy enough to complete your project.

Green Girl Charms & Beads- Those of you who are familiar with these pewter charms know how fun and whimsical the designs are. If you are not familiar with them, check out the display in the front window to see what all the talk is about.

Czech Glass- We marked the new strands with yellow tags to make it easier to find them on the wall. A small problem - there are so many new styles that it is hard to concentrate! Many people are coming in several days in a row just to absorb it all.

Just in time for the Buckaroo Bead Trunk Show... We just received a shipment of TierraCast’s new Bead Aligners. These beads are specially shaped to fit on either side of a lampwork (or other large hole) bead to prevent wobbling. Jenn was skeptical at first, but now loves them! For now, we are keeping them in the display case with the lampwork beads, so ask us to see them next time you are in.

Let's talk about color

Over the past two weeks we have had a lot of customers ask us how we come up with color. The simplified answer is that it is all around us.

Find you favorite photograph/painting; sit in your favorite part of the garden; pull your favorite shirt out of the closet. Take a long, close look at the colors. Now, look at the proportion of colors. For instance, right now I love my garden. There are several shades of green and just a riot of different purples... This was the inspiration for our Fantasy Flower Cuff!

If you need more help, we are always here for you. Also consider the Beaders Color Pallet by Margie Deeb. It has really opened my eyes to how I look at things. Plus, on the right side of our blog we have a random color selector. If you do not like what popped up, the click on "another" and find one that speaks to you.

One night last week I stayed late and went crazy ordering seed beads. Yesterday, 212 pounds of beads arrived. It will take us a couple of weeks to get all of them tubed, labeled and on the wall but I wanted to tease you a bit... The picture is of the new Apollo line. This line combines matte, opaque colors with copper. We have had the top color for a while now and it is a fast seller so do not wait too long to get your hands on the new ones!

What was hot this year? Sparkles! People all over were wearing layers and layers of sparkly necklaces. We now have a huge selection of these incredible sparkly, nicely priced, glass beads. Some sets come on a wire so you can just add a claps for and instant necklace!

We really concentrated on quality over quantity this year. I think that is most evident in the pearls we bought. If you love pearls like we do, come in to see the incredible finds!

This new style bead is an angled drop. "How do you use an angled drop?" you ask, well, we have been having fun using them in fringe, peyote spirals, Herringbone and even basic stringing.
